Gardening has been my life-long passion, occasional part-time profession. I particularly enjoy experimenting, both in the sense of trying new things, but also in the sense of doing trials, keeping notes, discovering what grows well for me and designing with those in mind.

Recently, I’ve had the (questionable) good fortune of having gardened in one place for many years, returning after an absence of 4 years to find it somewhat overgrown. Spent the past 2 seasons salvaging and pretty much completely reworking the perennial beds, this time with a much better understanding of how those plants will perform in my garden and the benefit of 20 years of soil amendment. Which is a good thing when your body is 25 years older than the first time.

In the past, I grew (and canned and froze and dried) most of our food while working full time. These days, scaling that back, catching up on the vacations I missed. Ease of maintenance has become a priority as I redesign, but there will always be a place for fresh veg & herbs, flowers plentiful enough for cutting, something sweetly scented near a favorite resting place. And, of course, the experimental new guy, so lusciously described in a catalog.
