After years of watching my parents sweat over their gardens and rolling my eyes, I was bitten by the bug when I decided to clean up the garden of the friends' house my girlfriend and I rent in Baltimore. We used some wild violets and \"extra\" plants from my parents' garden to re-establish the garden and spruce the yard up to an enjoyable condition. it was so overgrown that we even found an old fish pond in the back yard (unsalvageable, unfortunately) that our friends didn't know was there. It's proven interesting as I find myself having long, interesting conversations about gardening at the strangest moments with my peers (30 something artists) and my parents and their generation alike. While I managed to unwittingly gleen some knowledge from my parents as I scoffed at them when I was young, they've proven a vast and forgiving source of information (and cuttings and seeds) that helps me in my \"fly by the seat of my pants\" learning tactics. As I have two city house cats who don't go out, they're happy that the gardening is finding its way indoors too. They're just not happy that the only plants inside are cactuses.
