I'm in Canon City, in a small zone 6 area (the so-called "banana belt") surrounded by colder zones. Pretty hot and dry in the summer. I have a more or less conventional perennial garden, a small shade garden, and a desert/xeric garden that is probably my favorite. I like trying to grow subtropicals here, including an actual banana plant that dies back to the ground in winter, some trunk-forming yuccas and a couple shrubby palms.
