I moved to NC in 1998 and didn’t really get interested in gardening until I moved here. I lived most of my life in Florida and it was just too hot there to enjoy working outside. My house in Winston-Salem is on a one acre lot in a suburban neighborhood.

I’m turning most of the front yard into a shade garden (approx. 35 x 85 feet). It has native trees and I’ve planted shrubs, perennials, and bulbs. I also put in a winding stepping-stone path and a stone bench. Everyone loves the path. It was a huge help in defining the garden. I still have much to do. I’ve improved the soil quite a bit and learned a lot about plants. I do everything organically. Now I want to work on moving some perennials around and adding others to get more pleasing plant partners, colors, etc.

The back yard is mostly fenced for my dogs. It has some grass and an area that was never managed much until I moved here. It was poison oak, briars, honeysuckle, and scrub trees. With my son’s help, we’re turning it into a native wildlife area. I’ve planted viburnum, alnifolia, a serviceberry, and a Japanese maple so far and we’ve got rid of most of the poison oak. Everything is mostly shade.
