We are a couple in our 6th decade, and have gardened on a half-acre Ontario suburban lot for 20 years. Starting with a bare lot, we now have towering trees, many mixed beds (shrubs, perennials, annuals, bulbs) and a 60 X 40 vegetable garden. We have a few "hot spots" and grow banana, cactus and bamboo there. (Yes! they winter outdoors)My favorite flowers are irises, hostas, daylilies and recently, succulents. We have a small pond with goldfish and waterlilies. Our garden "just grew" like Topsy. Here s a funny thing that happened in our garden: my husband was planting beans and mistook poppy seed for soil inoculant. Each row of beans was marked with an abundant supply of poppies! We had to use tiny scissors to trim them all out, in order to save our beans.
