I garden in the worst possible place: Shady (North), uneven, downhill hard-topped backyard of an apartment building. I have always had a "houseful" of plants and have let nature pare that down to a collection of real survivors. They all go from a Winter of South exposure in the livingroom outside each Spring to a partial-full shade. I fill windowbox containers of Impatiens.
This year I'm trying a few new things: I'm going to experiment with other annuals--petunia, snapdragon, alyssum, pansy, (and from seed Lablab, Basella vine, Balsam) pushing their shade tolerance; I've started Colocasia, Caladium and Hosta indoors; and I'm growing from seed Impatiens, Torenia and "I'm so not making any promises about" Mimulus.
Of course, any and all of these are subject to purchasing as growing specimens. I'd like showy begonias and New Guinea Impatiens, but I'd like to get those already going (as I did with the Hypoestes).
My theme this year (and hopefully for many to come) is the dragonfly and I've already started collecting "stuff" with that motif. Colors I'm trying to achieve this year are orange, pink and purple -- I know, whoa! I'm also incorporating a lot of new and interesting containers rather than just the boring white plastic windowboxes: Cloissonne bowls; ceramic half-round wall planters; wire hanging baskets. I'm going for "Jungle whimsical."
I wish good luck and great success to any and all who attempt gardening on any scale!
