English and moved to Finland last year. Near Russian border in South East Finland. Beautiful, great garden (2000 sq meters)but rubbish clay soil and short temperate growing season and very cold winters. Garden looks truly amazing with so many flowers, fruit trees and veggie patch. Everything is "raised and the soil continually enriched. Trying to grow "An English Garden" and finding out the hard way its not easy here. Most Finnish stuff is "Basic", tried and trusted veggies, but as far as taste goes their potatoes and Apples are none discript. Originally looking for solution to Romanesco Growing and can only add.....I am still waiting for something to happen, although I have the tallest Brassica Plants I have ever seen. My pride and Joy are English Brussel Sprouts, and if they ever make Spouts then Christmas will be perfect. Trying to Educate the locals to grow more adventureous things, but slowly learning "It's not the Finnish Way". Wife expecting baby in December, she is Russian, now a Finnish National, graduate of Moscow Conservatory of Muisic. I am English (British National) with South African Mother, German and Irish Grand Parents, engineer by proffession but just starting a 1 year full time collage course in Finnish Language and Finnish History and Culture. This area is Mushroom Heaven and it is amazing what grows here in the woodlands and moss banks.....A whole lifes work to identify them I think.
