I do most of my butterfly in, gardn'in, and picture takin on my little 14 acres of paradise. South Louisiana pine woods with a nice mix of hardwoods. I try to manage for max wildlife...habitat and food. Predominate trees---Pine, Red & white oaks, hickory, maple, tuliptree, sassafras, blackcherry, dogwood, serviceberry, holly, persimmon, magnolia and beech. In the back, are a couple of acres of bottomland, with two small creeks, tupelo trees, bay and a pitcher plant bog, wild azaleas, tons of various ferns and joepye. The last several years I ve done a lot of burning and thinning to encouraging the return of native grasses and wildflowers. The local critters and I are beginning to enjoy the results of a lot of hard, hot work. Aug.2005 Katrina took out many large, beautiful trees.(crushing the understory in the process). Which led to more burning of the tree top impact area. I left the rest to rot and feed the soil. Feb.2010, I planted, by hand, 400 longleaf pine seedlings. There are volunteers for \"everything\" except longleaf. Now I m back to succession/re-forestation.
