I've delighted in that there are so many beautiful hardy perennials that do well in the short summer and long winter season in New England. Roses are a family favorite and seem to thrive on the salt air in coastal Maine. I have six varieties of climbing roses in my yard and several types of rugosas. I lost alot of rose cane in the harsh, snowless winter of '04 but thankfully the roots of most of the old roses survived and sent up new shoots. Some were over 80 years old and I hated the thought of losing them. I try my best at organic vegetable gardening. I love poppies and peonies and native herbs. My husband and I collect unusual things to incorporate into the landscaping or to imbed in cement for stepping stones.
