i am trying to make a city garden in pots and containers in a fenced in area in the back of a new house about 18 ft square and a long area on the north side of the house about 40 ft by 8 ft. in the front of the house is a fenced in area about 15 by 12 and shaded by a big tree. i have two standard poodles and i'm trying out groundcovers in the front that can withstand their paw traffic. they don't go out in the front much so i think ground cover has a fighting chance. just planted mazus reptans for it's reutation for withstanding foot traffic.. the extensive list of plants poisonous to poodles includes all the ivys, all bulbs, and vinca. i don't want to plant anything that could hurt them, and they will eat plants when i'm not around. the puppy ate all my ornamental kale last fall. i have had big suburban yards and small city gardens. here i need to plant for privacy as well as beauty. the back gardens have gravel and drainage tiles buried so i am limited to containers. i am in the heart of chicago about 3 miles from the lake.

I live in: United States

My zone is: 6 chicago
