I live on 5 acres and have been gardening for about 20yrs.We have lived here for 17 and have started from scratch. Before we built our house the land was farmed for hay for 20 yrs. and then turned into a field. The soil is poor and there were no trees. My husband planted 200 pine seedlings and the deer ate all but one! I have a horse so I started making compost using manure to try to improve the the soil. Its been a slow process. We put up a fence to try to keep out the deer, rabbits and voles. I have a large cottage garden with many perennial, shrubs, roses and annuals that I start from seed. All this is done completely organically. We try to encourage as many birds as possible and try to live with nature not against her. Besides my horse we have 4 cats, 1 dog and 3 children (2 sons in college, a married daughter and a grand-daughter).
