I'm relatively new to gardening, only taking it up since we bought a 1920's house in SE Portland in 1999. The 50'x100' lot was completely unlandscaped except for a big maple tree in the front yard and an even bigger Ailanthus (tree of heaven) in the sideyard. Well, the Ailanthus dropped a big limb on the house last fall (2002)--I had just been waiting for an excuse to get rid of the invasive monster, and that did it! My DH and I have slowly been working to make our yard lush and inviting, and we're almost there....at least until I decide one bed or another needs reworking!
