I'm a beginning gardener trying to grow primarily California native plants at a rental home in the Sacramento Valley. Our front yard is fairly normal, but our back yard is a sort of intermittent pond.

Currently, my most successful species are the following.

Woody Plants:

Cephalanthus occidentalis (buttonbush)

Cercis occidentalis (Western redbud)

Frangula californica (coffeeberry)

Mimulus aurantiacus (sticky monkeyflower)

Philadelphus lewisii (Lewis's mock orange)

Ribes aureum (golden currant)

Sambucus mexicana (blue elderberry)

Perennial Herbs:

Achillea millefolium (yarrow)

Artemisia douglasiana (mugwort)

Asclepias fascicularis (narrowleaf milkweed)

Chlorogalum pomeridianum (soap lily)

Carex barbarae (Santa Barbara sedge)

Carex praegracilis (clustered field sedge)

Eschscholzia californica (California poppy)

Fragaria vesca (wood strawberry)

Grindelia hirsutula (hairy gumplant)

Helenium puberulum (rosilla)

Juncus balticus (Baltic rush)

Juncus effusus (common rush)

Linum lewisii (blue flax)

Penstemon heterophyllus 'Blue Springs' (foothill beardtongue)

Phyla nodiflora (turkey-tangle fogfruit)

Ranunculus californicus (California buttercup)

Ratibida columnifera (prairie coneflower)

Rudbeckia hirta (black-eyed Susan)

Sporobolus airoides (alkali sacaton)

Symphyotrichum chilense (California aster)

In the drier front yard I have these additional perennial herbs:

Datura wrightii (sacred datura)

Eriogonum fasciculatum (Eastern Mojave buckwheat)

Erysimum capitatum (sand-dune wallflower)

Heuchera maxima (island alum root)

Melica californica (California melic grass)

Salvia sonomensis (Sonoma sage)

Sphaeralcea philippiana (scarlet mallow)

I also have lots of successful annuals, but of course it's easy to grow annuals in an intermittent pond. I won't bother listing those. I'm also not listing any species that haven't yet firmly established themselves and demonstrated their ability to survive here.

I live in: United States

My zone is: USDA 9a/Sunset 8 (CA)
