We built our house about 10 years ago and to start landscaping my husband (Mr. Thrifty) decided that we could go to all of these abandoned farmsteads and dig up some lilacs, shrubs, hosta plants and trees. It was early spring and the plants hadn't leafed out yet, so we would find a likely looking specimen, dig it up, put the roots in a plastic bag so they wouldn't dry out before we got home. We must have gotten about 10 trees and a bunch of lilacs and other shrubby plants. Since it was a warm day and my hair kept falling in my eyes I kept brushing it out of the way, and since we were hot from all that digging we stopped for an ice cream cone on the way home. Well I must have wiped the ice cream from my face with my hands too because the next morning I had developed this AWFUL rash that itched like the devil all around my mouth and eyes. Evidently there were dormant poison ivy plants where we were digging and I had handled them and spread the oil all over my face. My face developed weeping blisters and my eyes swelled shut and my kids said I looked really scary like some monster. Needless to say, I couldn't go to work like that, and while I was home I got to meet our mail carrier, the UPS man, the two guys hauling gravel for our driveway and assorted neighbors. I'm surprised that any of them ever came back! So that is how I got the handle piznivy.
My passion is daylilies and although I've just recently started raising them, I have over 150 different cultivars and hope to start hybridizing them. My husband raises vegetables for the local Farmer's Market and just recently retired.
We are now working on clearing my old horse pasture and developing different gardens in it.
