I have been growing roses for over 30 years. I grow a little of everything - mostly miniatures. I would grow more shrubs if I had more sun, but we have lots of large trees. I am not allowed to cut down these trees due to subdivision rules. It s probably just as well given my age.
I am a Life member of ARS, former Region 6 Director, national chair of Roses in Review, co-chair of Registration, Co-Editor of Modern Roses 12 and the Official List of Approved Exhibition Names, and editor of the Handbook for Selecting Roses. I am also a Master Consulting Rosarian, a rose horticulture judge, and an ARS patron. I was general chairman of the ARS national convention in St. Louis in the fall of 1996.
I just removed all the soil from my main bed (30 x5 ) and have replaced it with a new mix of soil, compost, composted manure, and perlite. It is a lot lighter than the old soil. We will see if the roses will do better in this new soil mix.
