I'm a journalist, writer and editor (or is that redundant), living in Petaluma. I have a strong-backed husband and three grown sons. We live in a standard tract home but have a large front yard filled with mostly heritage roses, a showstopper in springtime. When we moved in, the yard was rock and dead juniper, so after we cleared everything off it, we planted fava beans to help restore the depleted soil before we put in the roses. This is a neighborhood of conventional front lawns, and the neighbors were horrified, not understanding we were going to plow them under. We enjoyed the assumption too much to correct it.
