I live in central New Jersey (Somerset County) wtih my husband and 3 daughters (2 in college, 1 in H.S.) and our dog Tobi (a lab/St Bernard mix)
I had my first vegetable garden when I was about 7. I became interested in gardening by talking over the fence to the little old Italian man who lived next door. He would explain to me (in broken italian) what to do next. I have had a garden ever since.
In 1993 we built the house where I now live. I often joke that we sold the old house because I ran out of places to plant things. One of the first things I did was install a fence for a vegetable garden. But landscaping/gardening was becoming very frustrating with all the deer in central Jersey. I was constantly saying "someday I’m going to put up a fence for a flower garden".
In March 2000 my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. After the initial shock, adjustments, (pick the emotion) I decided to put up that fence I was always talking about in order to keep busy as a way to cope. I think I raised keeping busy to a new level. I also accuse my husband of going off disability and back to work to avoid having to help plant another bush! I have to say gardening is what helped me make it though. Thinking about what to plant and sleeping from being exhausted from working in the yard. March 2005 will be 5 years, and Sloan Kettering will declare my husband cured. They say sometimes they get lucky (1 out of every 2000)
