I am a relatively new (2012) container gardener. I went with containers on table frames because of a herniated back disc and also because my best sun is in my front yard on an otherwise large unused paved patio area. I work with computers all day. I look forward to tending to my container garden for 15 minutes or so every day. It really soothes my soul to get some dirt under my fingernails and some fresh fruit and vegetable items from my garden every now and then. I don't like the 5-1-1 pine bark fine based soil-free medium and liquid fertilizer approach recommended for container gardening on this website. I tried it. OK, drainage is great. But the need to water and add fertilizer and pay close attention to everything doesn't work for me. It's also expensive. I prefer composting my kitchen scraps and lawn clippings and mixing in leaves and grasses and wicking out the extra water. Not counting my time everything is free. My veggies seem to prefer it, too. I did side by side experiments and my compost won over Miracle Grow and 5-1-1. More experiments to come.
