I'm an electrical engineer, with 3 children, and a wife of 20 years. She's not interested in gardening but she tolerates my efforts as long as I don't make messes or spend too much money :)

I've spent my entire life in the Western Maryland. This is a rural area and I've always been around farming and gardening. When I was growing up, my father always had a large garden. I was raised on fresh, canned and frozen vegetables. When I was young, weeding this large garden was one of my chores; I swore I would never have a garden! However, after a stint of apartment living in my early 20's, it didn't take me long to yearn for the soil.

I started working on a farm when I was 15 years old and continued working there through my second year of college. The primary farm crops there were apples and peaches but we also produced vegetables for the local markets and tomatoes for the cannery. It was hard work, but I look back to those years and remember that I was happy and life was simple.

In 1986 I bought land to build a house and I started my first garden before the house was completed. I've been gardening in earnest ever since. I grow a whole laundry list of vegetables but tomatoes have always been my favorite crop. I also like canning, freezing, preserving, and storing my harvest. I'm not too interested in ornamental plants, I grow just enough to make my home look acceptable.

I love to experiment with gardening techniques and I try new things every year. I have a "mad scientist" sort of personality. The neighbors and family think I'm nuts but they just don't understand :)

DISCLAIMER: I can be over-inquistive, over-analytical and even headstrong at times. I speak my mind; I like when others do the same. Please don't mistake these traits as disrespectful or mean-spirited. I really enjoy spirited discussions and I think they bring the best information to light.

I'm a member of the SSE and I think its a fine cause.
