I'm a plant geek, nature lover, political theory professor, weimaraner and tortoise shell cat owner/companion--in no particular order. I'm also a Californian living in Iowa, still adjusting to its totally unnecessary cold (3 degrees in November? please!), but loving its velvety black soil. My husband and I recently bought our first house which means this fall I'm planting my first garden of my own (after having colonized my parents' yard while in college, and my apartment building's yard while in grad school). I've gardened in zone 9 (CA), 7 (MD), and 4 (IA).

A funny story? I once wept inconsolably because my landlord's "gardening" crew ripped up my tithonia and blue sweet pea seedlings, thinking they were weeds. It frightened my husband (my weeping, not the "gardeners").
