Mother's Day 2004
Hello Everyone! Thank-you for taking the time to stop by my webpage. I hope that you like what you read, and that we will have many pleasant chats/exchanges in the future.
So, who am I? I'm a newbie twice over since I recently moved to the East Coast with my husband and then decided to take up gardening. (I've been making all kinds of mistakes - like I planted my Spring Bulbs in the dead of winter instead of the Fall. Can't believe how many came up and bloomed anyways!)
Now that I've found a site with such patient and friendly people, I hope that I will have better success in my garden. (If not, then at least I'm learning a lot about Poison Ivy, Black Walnut Trees' toxicity to plants, and 17-year Cicadas! Those weren't problems I really experienced or even heard about growing up in Southern California.) I want to make my yard \"bloom with color\" like I saw in my own neighborhood this Spring, so I'm already researching what to plant this Fall. From the sounds of it, I'll be planting more Tulips, Narcissus, Hyacinths, Muscari, and Chionodoxa. I'm also reading about how to grow Herbs and Tomatoes during the Summer. So far, the goals are to propogate Sweet Basil, Pineapple Sage, and English Lavendar for Herbs and grow two varieties of Tomatoes (Early Girl and Better Boy) for our consumption. For Perennials, I'm determined to grow Blue and Pink Forget-Me-Nots from seed and Red, Orange, White, and Pink Daylilies from roots I got at Costco. Annuals are limited to New Guinea Impatiens during the Summer months, so that I can try Pansies in the Fall. Anyways, those are my \"dream plans\" for right now.
Hard to believe that this all came about because of a simple coincidence. I had gotten tired of having to buy green onions from the grocery store, so I decided to stick them in some water and see if they lasted longer. We don't have a lot of counter space in our kitchen, so I put them on the dining room table. Later on that night I noticed that our cat, Neko (explains the username doesn't it?), was chewing on them! To save my green onions from becoming part of a \"kitty's salad dish,\" I planted him some cat grass. He loved it, and my green onions did great in water. Because of those two little success stories, I thought, \"Maybe I should give growing plants a try.\" From then on, I started looking in the grocery store for other vegetables to \"extend the life\" of via roots in water. Some Basil stalks, I noticed, still had roots attached to them, so I tried sticking them in water. It worked for a little while, but not as long as the onions. I decided that it should have worked, and that I just needed more information.
With that in mind, I did a Google search on-line and ended up in the Herb Forum here at GardenWeb. Now I'm addicted and have spent a lot of time in not only Herbs, but also the Plant Propagation, Container Gardening, Daylilies, Impatiens, Mid-Atlantic Gardening, Frugal Gardening (yes, we're poor - sigh), and, of course, New to Gardening Forums. Now that I'm a member of GardenWeb, I hope to benefit from the Plant and/or Seed Exchange Forums too. But first, I have to figure out what is a weed and what is a plant in my yard!
Looking forward to getting better acquainted with you all,
Robyn
