I’ve had a vegetable garden every year since I was in college, always in Northern California, except for a few years in East Africa. My wife Beth and I moved from the East Bay Area ( strong marine/fog influence ) up here to the Sebastopol area 3 years ago. We have a beautiful daughter Emily who is almost 2 years old and is going to grow up in the country. She planted the corn this year and picked lots of snap peas last year...
In Sebastopol, we have longer hotter summers along with colder winters. In the East Bay we could not grow melons or other vegetables and fruit trees that like a long hot summer. I have always collected and saved interesting vegetable seed, and am enjoying living in the country with enough room for everything, even if it is a big struggle with the gophers and deer.
This is the third year for my vegetable garden here and I am still getting used to the climate, soil, water and everything else here. The gophers are a big problem and I have slowly lined all my beds with wire. This year was the first year I could really start the garden nicely without a lot of digging and preparing. I’ve grown melons before, but it has been a long while, and I’m having fun growing many different types. Since I haven’t been able to grow them for so long, my focus is there, and on the fruit trees ( planted 17 trees this year ), although I have a full garden this year.
I have a fairly large seed collection that I take good care of ( I keep the seeds in airtight containers with dessicant, in their own small refrigerator ). I’m looking forward to seeing if others are interested in trading with me.
I do not use any pesticides in my garden, but occasionally I do use some chemical fertilizers ( not often ). I am very much interested in sustainable gardening, but I am also an epidemiologist by training and have some health concerns about some organic fertilizers. I mostly use plant compost and cover crops ( esp. favas ).
