I'm an artist, stay at home mother of a 4 year old, and gardener. I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
I recently acquired an old Dallas Planting Manual at a thrift store. I can remember my grandmother using hers to tell her when to do various gardening chores and when to start plants from seed. So I'm trying the plants the manual suggests this year.
It suggests lots of annuals! I used to avoid them because I wanted as little maintaince as possible with my garden (all that planting and then pulling up again!). Now I have a cold frame and my seed starting skills are greatly improved. So the challenge of having new things to put in the garden on a regular basis is tempting. I have become addicted to awaiting new sprouts and eagerly await thinning out seed flats and repotting new plants! So I'm trying to start new seed every 3 weeks. So hopefully I will have plenty left over seed to trade.
I also aquired a book on front yard gardens that has inspired me to dig up my front yard and replace the lawn with flower beds and plants. I have already started terracing the slope in front of my house and replacing the soil. My neighbors think I'm nuts and keep warning me how much work and watering a flower bed is (which shows how little they know). But they give me polite encouragment and are quite curious. I enjoy them comming out to stare, chat and give advice. I have met neighbors that are normaly reclusive because they are curious about the disapearance of my lawn.
