I want to thank you for taking the time to "look me up"!
I live on 7+ acres up in the mountains of New York State between Zones 4 & 5. Most maps list us as Zone 5 -- but the mountain weather puts us at Zone 4 some years. I am in a valley, with the surrounding mountains at about 3200 - 3600 feet ASL.
I have been here for about 7 1/2 years with gardening presenting many challenges. The soil is very rocky and hard to till. The elevation does make make for early springs or late falls -- and the challenge of a short growing season is tough. I have had to cover tomatoes in mid-July because temps dropped down at night to 42-44 degrees F! Our last frost date (by locals) can be July 4th!
This has prompted me to figure out all kinds of "thermal" covers to help the plants along... and to search for short-season veggies to grow. I also grow organically -- and do not use anything but manure and compost on my plants.
I have 3 veggie gardens -- one is a Sacred Geometry Garden, one is a kitchen garden and one is a potato patch. I also grow lots of flowers.
This year I am moving our kitchen garden and want to do a "4 Seasons Garden" like Eliot Coleman - ( http://www.fourseasonfarm.com/ ) with a convertible greenhouse over the new garden to try to get some longer term use out of it. I have a small glass greenhouse (8' x 22' ) and a potting shed ( that used to be my greenhouse!) that I built myself (attached to side of garage)that I keep improving upon -- but it is only big enough for seed starting -- or wintering over some perennials that did not make it into the ground!
I am a mother of 4 young children... and zillions of animals! Would love to talk to others who enjoy gardening as much as I do!
