We are beginning to wrest back our woodlands from the WPA pine grid and are slowly integrating native plants for color. My personal favorites are the violets and lillies of the valley, both happy to coexist with the pines, oaks, sassafrasses & maples on our acre+ homesite. We both benefit and suffer from the lake-effect weather of Lake Michigan, which this year has meant a cold, late spring. In the next two years I hope to introduce trillium and soloman's seal to the opened spaces, with help from the violets currently hibernating in my basement.
