My gardens seem to grow exponentially each year, with hostamania becoming a fast-growing contributor to my garden expenses. The flip side of this is that since my back yard is rather shady, my vegetable gardening space is limited. My DH and kids are inexplicably opposed to my turning our front yard into one giant vegetable garden (go figure). The veggies I am able to grow are pillaged by a woodchuck and its offspring, deer, rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks. Oh, and crows. :-P Darn critters managed to chomp most of my ripe tomatoes last year--the night before I was going to pick them. ARGH! I also pulled out all my strawberries (critters ate 99%), and the blueberries are coming out, too (same reason). I'm all for supporting wildlife, but this is ridiculous. Good thing I have a community garden plot, where the fence keeps out the worst offenders! I just wish I had a huge, sunny field where I could grow all of the tomato varieties that I want!
