Well, since moving in last year our home on a river has been mightily landscaped. The back side of the house still opens to a west-facing river view and our yard is still sun-filled, slanting down to a 5-ft raised wall along the water's edge, but now we have a garden shed and a redwood fence with a long perennial border.

We love to sit on our deck and watch the egrets, herons, ducks, turtles, muskrats, deer, and even an occasional beaver. We also enjoyed, then regretted, the two families of birds that nested in the eaves of our covered deck all last year. My husband and I watched two pair mate (not easy on a narrow beam), hatch two sets of eggs, and teach the younguns to fly, but the bird droppings got to us. We finally had to "shut down the inn" with some wire screening.

Despite all the hard, physical work, it's been so much fun and my husband is now actually enjoying gardening. There is really no such thing as a maintenance free garden!
