I'm a new gardener, and having a some success and a few failures, but I've learned a lot. It's fun, and I plan to do this until I can't bend over anymore. I actually started gardening as a child with my father. We'd grow tomatoes, cucumbers, and greeen peppers from small plants, which I did this spring. I didn't garden in my younger adult years because my husband and I had lived in apartments the first 9 years of our marriage. Since we've moved to our new home, I've dug several beds, sometimes with his help, adding trees, perennials, bulbs, shrubs, and more recently herbs and vegetables. My favorites have been perennials because they keep coming back bigger everytime, and they are very dependable. I'm developing a new appreciation for annuals. While looking a my neighbors colorfully flourishing garden, I tried to figure out her secret, and I realized that she plugs in annuals to make up for the perennials that have ceased blooming for the season. Also, I've been trying to get my children interested, but my five year old son simply likes digging in dirt, and plucking leaves off of some of my favorite plants despite being scolded(suprise, suprise). My feme fatale 7 y.o. daughter will have nothing to do with dirt, and gardening because she hates getty dirty, and worse - insects! So, it looks like I'll be solo for a while, but that's o.k. because I love the solitude, and the sense of accomplishment that gardening provides.
