When I was a child we always had a vegetable garden. My mother never let me plant flowers because she said it was
"a waste of space". So when I married and had my own yard I
started a cottage garden, packed with flowers. I do grow
vegetables too, mixed in with the flowers. I try to make my
garden a fun place for my girls and thier friends to play.
I have an after-school reading program for the kids in the neighborhood, and I set up little scenes from our favorite books, in the garden. A favorite of the kids is a little
house I made for Arriety from "The Borrowers". I made it from a broken teapot. We made her a little table and bought her some doll house chairs. The kids love to try to spot
