My balcony is 5.8 feet deep and 22 feet long. In the house in which I lived for 27 years, I had both a sun garden and a shade garden. I think that what I miss the most are my hostas. I have tried growing them in pots on the balcony, but with little success.

I have read that the Japanese have great success growing Hostas in pots. Whether they are able to grow them indoors or not, I don't know.

Although my balcony faces east, it seems to me that I get sun again in the afternoon -- and the sun in Baltimore(MD)in July and August can be a killer.

Last summer my caladiums did fairly well (they had HUGE leaves with lots of pink, not red). This summer the poor things are most unhappy. (This time they are all green and white). I love the look of the caladiums, but they are madly expensive, they don't winter over, and too much sun will kill them. Any suggestions re growing Hostas and/or Caladiums would be most appreciated. The balcony does have a strip of shade under the overhang, but the Caladiums have been in window boxes on the railing where they have no protection from the sun. Perhaps the pale green and white ones are even more fragile than the pink and red ones?

I live in: United States
