I like kid friendly plants, packing lots of perennials into small spaces, and I think gardening in a small space means a small suburban city lot, not 1/2 acre!
I follow zones for practicality purposes but like to ignore them too. Every out of zone plant gets a three year trial period in my garden. Consequently, I have given up on foxglove but have a lovely French pussy willow that is five years old!
