In 2003 my husband and I bought our first home in Somerville, MA. The first summer I put in two small (7x9 and 9x9) gardens in front of the house where there used to be only poorly cared for grass.

The next summer I moved on to the much more intimidating 40x40 backyard. Previous owners basically ignored the backyard except when they planted very random trees entirely too close together and too close to the house and fences. Then they would occasionally "prune" the trees, which generally involved such brilliant moves as cutting a tree off 5 feet above the ground and then leaving it to regrow like that. Also there were weeds everywhere. But my husband and I have made some good progress and after the first year of cleaning up, putting in trees and shrubs, it started to look like a garden. Then came the grass and now flowers. What a difference. I'm officially obsessed!

I really like reading the New England forum. I've found everyone there to be so supportive and it's interesting to hear what people around me are doing.
