I live on 8.5 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We are in the woods, but also have about an acre of open sunny area as our "backyard". Most of the property is a mix of tall Coastal Redwoods, Live Oaks and Madrones. All of this has an undergrowth of ferns and trilliums and such. I have both gentle slopes and steep hills.
We do not have deer fencing but occasionally consider it. The deer are plentiful and close and I have named all the regulars. We have 4 feline family members that keep the rodent population under control.
After the deer and the erosion my biggest challenge is creating a cultivated landscape that is still in tune with the natural backdrop. Nothing too formal or tidy will blend.
I try to keep my garden organic and since my area is not heavily populated nature takes care of the balance extremely well. The only 2 exceptions are: 1) poisen oak - I use Roundup because I’m very allergic, and 2) I use Miracle Grow for my patio containers.
If you have a garden similar to mine I would love to exchange ideas about the joys and challenges.
I live in: United States
