i have 2 raised beds (3'x 12' x 16")because the south end of my yard is the lowest point in the neighborhood. All the rain run-off goes through there to the creek that borders our backyards... so the landlord put down 3" of crushed gravel. I sweated, cursed and bled digging through it to plant my 6 fruit trees last fall, and to dig the 3' deep holes for my grape arbor. But it will all be worth it! I have the beginnings of a small hedge of nanking cherry bushes along the creek bank and a 3-section compost bin made of pallets and fence posts...I love having a landlord that lets me garden! Plans for spring include a raised strawberry bed in my front yard and killing as much grass as i can get away with to plant low-growing herbs and edible flowers. I refuse to invest ANY time, money, or effort on plants that don't make food or medicine. In this economy I try to convince everyone I can to remove purely ornamental plants and replace them with something useful...a pecan tree shades your house just as well as a maple, and you can sell the seedlings instead of get frustrated trying to pull them out of your vegi patch. My 2 LEAST-favorite plants: grass and maple trees...both are invasive weeds. I guess I got bumped up to Zone 7a :) I grew up in zone 4 in Idaho and that is why I love where I live so much... Perfectly good cherry tomatoes still hanging on to the vines at Christmas!
