My husband and two teenage daughters started our landscape project with the purchase of our home 5 years ago. The lot is 3/4 acre and 1/2 is a pretty steep slope. The home and landscape were 30 years old, and even though the house had been cared for the outside was completely overgrown. The juniper bushes were the 1st to go, then the wild rose bramble, and chock cherrys.
We have since poured patio in the back yard, installed 2 ponds, built retaining walls, observation deck, and playhouse for the youngest. Our view from the observation deck is the eastern cascade mountains that surround beautiful Leavenworth Wa., and then down on to the ponds and patio area in the yard.
The front yard transformation didn't start untill last summer, but is almost complete. It included all new hardscape of driveway, raised rock flower beds, and totally enclosed by a concrete block wall. The crowning glory is a 9ft. gate set on the diagonal. The gate is framed with hammered steel tubing welded into a sunburst disign, and faced with rough sawed maple boards, the entire gate is roofed in the same style as the house, and trimmed with copper flashing. I love the glow from the street lights and reflection from the sun.
To finish, we will stucco the wall, and plant with climbing vines, and we are making our own pavers, so the curving pathways will have interlocking gecko pavers winding around the beds and to the back of the house. As I have an affinity for japanese style gardens, but love southwest style, the front has become an eclectic combination of styles and flavors.
