I grow a mix of roses - OGRs, floribundas, few HTs, two climbers, few minis, few Austin/English and shrubs. They are all planted in the ground, in hot humid Maryland, northwest of DC. (Maryland is warmer than northern NJ, so a longer growing season and taller bushes - but more humidity and fungus and insects - ugh!)
