I live in the lush (yes LUSH) foothills of the Sonoron desert just outside Phoenix AZ on an acre of mostly untouched virgin desert. My husband & I have a small ranch house with 2 horses, 2 dogs and many many plant eating rabbits, squirrels & chipmunks here. Our garden philosophy is to work with all the wonderful big paloverde, mesquite, cacti & small natural plants that we have adding mostly more of the same (only a bit more exotic desert species) plus a few "traditional" garden plants just on the edges of our patios. We also have a garden pond (very small) and more than a couple dozen large goldfish. Most people don't realize how green and beautiful the desert can be - we live in the middle of it and really appreciate the beauty. Of course it does turn brown during the dry heat of summer but that's a small price to pay for the green the rest of the year.
