I'm the daughter of a theoretical biologist and a nurse (who also happens to be a gardener, primarily of Irises). This has given me an unusual, mixed perspective on gardening and almost everything else. I'm a writer and artist, a parent (including one little one who is handicapped), and a Celtic music afficionado with a connection to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton. I love the sea but I don't live close enough to it at present-- Lake Ontario just doesn't have the same effect. I think it's the "breathing" pattern that the water makes. The sea "breathes" very deeply, with a longer phase between waves hitting the beach. The lake, in contrast, pants. Not nearly as relaxing to listen to, but water in general is a wonderful thing so I'm not complaining. I'm a homebody who lives (a lot of the time) inside her head and considers an imagination to be the best playground. But sometimes, when thoughts get too fatiguing, a blooming plant with fragrant flowers is exactly the right counterpoint. Our senses are also a wonderful playground. A fragrant blooming plant in the depths of winter, now that's really a joy. I'm a beginner with some of the tropicals and I don't have a greenhouse, alas. But I'm a quick study. It's nice to find a community of people who are willing to have their brains picked! I am willing to share what I've learned too.
