I have been vegetable gardening for more than 30 years and I still find it a pleasant way to relax. I have gardened in the Salt Lake area for the last 5 years and this is my third garden in my present location. When I bought this house there was an old above ground swimming pool surrounded by a redwood deck. The pool is gone, I salvaged enough wood for a new deck, and best of all I had enough wood to build a number of 3 X 8 beds, 2 boards high. This was my first experience with raised beds and so far it has been wonderful. I can make perfect soil, easily control weeds, control snails, and best of all apply water directly to the base of the plants. If the soil wasnt so porous I could flood irrigate. In 2006, for the first time in my life (this is the warmest place I have ever lived) I planted a few second crops. In 2007 I planned the beds with second crops in mind. I followed early peas with bush beans, followed garlic with the cabbage, and followed onions with carrots and so on. Each year I try new varieties and am always in the mood to discuss new varieties and techniques.
