I like to fight with south Louisiana weather and grow vegetables, flowers, and some fruit. I also have a pond with a waterfall that can be quite relaxing in the evening.
I love spring when my orange tree is in bloom, the fragrance of the flowers, the buzz of the bees around my head, and my three teenagers asking for money. I have a contest every year with the local bird population for the harvest of my fig crop. I will be planting blackberries this year (2004) and putting a net over them hoping I can win at least one battle with the confounded birds. I am hampered by living in the burbs and have a small yard but I try to utilize the space I have to the fullest extent allowed by my wife (She likes grass, I find it boring and always in need of cutting). Truthfully, I love to work the soil and smell the fresh earth as I am putting out young transplants to begin a new growing season. Who knows one day something I plant my actually grow and produce.
