I've been a keen gardener since childhood. I just love plants, especially the weird and wonderful ones. I am a botanist by profession - obsessed by plants in and out of work. For my job my speciality is weeds. How did someone who loves plants so much end up working on weeds - killing plants? Hmm, sometimes I wonder.
Some of my favourite plants.
blood lily (Haemanthus coccineus). This beautiful South African bulb has moved house with me nine times (three different cities too), so it's lucky that it does well in a pot (and it's not a weed).
Trillium chloropetalum. Here these are slow to grow and expensive to buy. Six years ago a friend gave me a division from the plant she had in her garden. This friend died a few months later, but every time I look at my trillium I think of her (and it's not a weed).
All daffodils. I just don't like winter. I love the determined cheeriness of daffodils, I just have to smile and I know that winter is gone for another year (and they are not weeds).
Euphorbia decaryi. Even when in the prime of health this Madagascar succulent doesn't really look like much, but its different. Before I got one of my own I looked after one for a friend, neither of us had any idea what it was and it was really neat working out what it was and how to care for it (and it's not a weed).
Audrey II from "Little Shop of Horrors". The only plant I can think of to have a lead role in a musical. (Okay, this one's a weed.)
My zone is: New Zealand
