I love gardening and when buying a house, the main criteria was a large garden, which we now have, approx. 1/2 acre all around the house. I put in a small pond in the front garden, several beds in the side garden, another large pond in the back garden and a polytunnel and chicken run in the other side garden. We started out with buying six goldfish and now two years later have about 100 in the two ponds. Our three hens, in the chicken run, obligingly provide us with eggs every day and also valuable manure for the garden. When that is not enough our friendly neighbouring farmer brings us a trailer load of cow manure, so I consider myself a naturalist gardener, as opposed to an organic gardener, as the rules for organic gardening are ever so strict!

I am a firm believer of propagation, seed collecting, division, etc., though I also often splash out on new plants if something catches my eye, and I know none of my friends have it. Then the following year I take cuttings and share them with my friends. I love to collect unusual plants and plant my beds very closely, so that I don't need to do any staking. When there are bare patches, I plug them with annuals.
