about 9 years ago i doubled the size of my mailbox garden to handle 2 flats of summer annuals (located in Raleigh). the next year i tripled it, and promptly decided that i needed a plan and advice in order to avoid a perpetual dissatisfaction with random plantings. so i consulted with Niche Gardens in Chapel Hill, put the bones in place , started a compost pile, dug in lots of compost, and have been planting and visiting gardens since then. wintersowing helped to stem the tide of money flowing out, and filled the gardens a little faster. i don’t have all that much sunny space for the mailbox flowers...and now i am very interested in planting in my natural areas, which are mostly shade gardens. i dont know quite how this will progress because the deer and rabbits have me cornered at present. now i am trading out some of the perennials, which have spread enough for divisions, for evergreens. Niche told me to do this to start with, and i am just now convinced that i like the mixed areas better than all perennials. i have been experimenting with basic propagation. its all loads of fun!
