Each spring I let the grass grow until all the violets, ajuga, and various other volunteers have bloomed. I like the surprise of finding new residents, one year bluettes, another white violets. After mowing the "lawn" has a wonderfully various texture of leaves and moss amid the grass. With a primarily shady property, this area of green needs little mowing and less watering. Only the hardy survive. I keep trying various plants that require partial sun or partial shade, even stubbornly sun, and what persists I consider a gift.
