I'm a bamboo fanatic. I got my first bamboo plant a couple years ago and soon became addicted. Nearly every day, I learn something new from the experts on the Bamboo forum. I try to teach as much as I can too, to give something back to this wonderful GardenWeb community.

I've been an avid composter for many years, but since I found the Soil, Compost and Mulch forum, I realize I still have much to learn. With any luck, that will always be the case!

A bit of my philosophy: I believe plants are sentient beings. That is, they aren't "just alive", they are conscious and aware, they "think" (albeit, probably in a very different way than we animals do), and they deliberately and purposefully interact with the other plants and creatures in their environment. I'm a scientist at heart, but I'm also a life-long student and naturalist who tries to be openmindedly observant. I think that if one looks for sentience in the plant world, it's not so difficult to see.

I'm also an animal lover, so I try to make my yard wildlife-friendly. I always try discouraging plant-eating pests with barriers or distracting them with bribes before I resort to harsher measures. That rule doesn't apply to gophers, however. Gophers are the lowest form of garden pest, and I mean that literally. ;-)
