Husband and I recently (5mo.) purchased our retirement home. It was built in 1862 and we are trying to restore it. We have a slate roof and all the other things that we don't know how to fix or maintain so I rely on the Garden Web to help get us through this time of restoration with our body and mind intact. A funny story, well, let me think, oh! it was this spring when I was raking leaves (former owner didn't bother) I hear a rustle in the leaves and to my surprise there was a snake with about 8 or 9 inches of its head and body off the ground wiggling toward me, I didn't want to harm it so I kicked leaves toward it. The snake stopped but kept its head in the air thus making me look to see what was wrong to make the snake behave this way. Well, much to my alarm, there were 7 other smaller snake doing the same head and body thing. This was too much for me to stand so I went to the larger snake scooped onto the leaf rake then proceeded to try to carry it across the road and back to the woods . But the snake had other ideas and slithered off the rake and begin to strike at me and the other snakes turned toward us and zeroed in. This startled me even more, and I was bound and determined to get that snake over the road and back into the woods, so I would flip her about 6 or 8 feet at a time, to get her across the road, then picked the snake up with rake again, proceeded to carry it across the road didn't want the big trucks to hit it. I proceed to carry/flip the other snakes back across the road. I didn't know why the snakes was behaving this manner, so I researched and found that the larger one probably was a female was in heat and the smaller ones were males. But they did their hanky panky in the woods and never was seen again on my side of the road. My friends have said thet they would have given money just to see the ordeal. I'm ok with snakes as long as they stay 6 to 8 foot away.
