I moved from the heavy red clays of NW Alabama to the light sandy soils of central Baldwin county in 1995. The home my wife Lani and I bought sits on 2 acres which has about 25 longleaf and slash pines complimented with 30 to 40 camelias that are about 40 years old. There are also about 50 azelias from ages 40 to 10. Needless to say I have not planted any more of these bushes/trees.
I became interested in the yard about 2 years ago and started making beds where there was enough light to grow perennials. Our plant selections tend toward more native and hardy things. Bed making is based on the lazy boy approach. Most areas are forked as deep as the tines will go then a few inches of cotton gin trash, grass clippings, composted manure, leaves, and a thick topping of pine straw.
I evolved into the lazy boy method through 20 years of veggy gardening in those heavy north Alabama clays. My last 17 years of gardens were no till and I'm spoiled to the method, besides it seems to work just as well with flowers as it did with the vegetables. Just doodle out a hole in the mulch and plant.
We also like bulbs. Several types of lillys migrated to Bay Minette with us and have been slowly added to. Other bulbs are interesting to us and we are continually expanding the collection.
