I live in a small 1940s ranch house in the north San Fernando Valley, and began gardening with antique roses (favorites are teas, noisettes & chinas) and a small vegetable garden. 3 orange trees shading the south side of my house died, and I planted rambling roses at the base for shade.
I also garden in containers and pretty much organic. I have become a fragrance-fanatic and have added several jasmines, Gardenias, Cestrum, Citrus, Solandra, Crinums, Stephanotis, Michelias, Brugmansia, Philadelphus, Osmanthus, night-blooming cereus & hylocereus/Dragonfruit and epiphyllums and other (fragrant)tropicals and vines. I have around 100 Plumeria cuttings to 15 gal mostly named hybrids which I will pare down to a manageable number as I evaluate the bloom fragrance, growth habit, etc.
This past winter I lost one of the orange tree trellis/ ramblers to wind so I got to fill the space with a 30'"fedge" of dwarf fruit trees, 4 Japanese persimmons and a jumble of edibles (herbs, flowers, squash, berries, tomatoes). In addition, I've added several dwarf avocado trees, a white sapote, dwarf almond (which I am espalier-ing), dwarf walnut, figs, citrus, flowering cherry, plum, apricot, and passiflora. There was already an apple and pear tree when I moved in. I am planning to experiment with more espalier and fruit (like Lapins cherry and white apricot).
I have a special interest in horticultural history and in growing heirloom fruit, veggies and flowers.
