We live rurally in Grass Valley, CA., smack dab in the heart of the Gold Country. We ( meaning hubby, Robert, our last two remaining teens, three dogs - one inherited - and me, of course) live in a monster of a 1912 Farm House. Its 4,500 square foot and a continual black hole for the check book.

Our house has all the flavors of a craftsman era home, except for the kitchen, where its a more traditional farm style with cove ceilings.

After 15 years of sinking money into roofs, electrical, heating & air, water systems (I could go on...), we are finally getting to the kitchen, which was last remodeled in 1973. In spite of Harvest Gold everything, it was a very high quality remodel, so all the costly wiring and ventilation is already done.

This time around, were updating with a Viking Rangetop, trash compactor, dishwasher and ovens. I read all the pros and cons about appliances here and in the end chose Viking because I liked the knobs instead of electronic push pads. Somehow those knobs fit the era of my house better... Were doing a Sub-Zero built in, Bianco Romano Granite countertops as they looked more like Marble, which would be more authentic to the era of the house, but with two teenage boys, I need strong and durable...

We really splurged and bought a SS Bates & Bates Farmhouse sink with utility grids and basket. It is replacing my loyal but worn out Harvest Gold Cast Iron Kohler Lakeside, vintage 1973. . .

Meanwhile as I type, we have no range and no kitchen sink. My plywood countertops are covered with heavy Duty Aluminum Foil. (After experimenting, I chose to seal the foil seams with clear glossy tape instead of Matte Finish, as the glossy looked so much better.)

I am doing dishes in my clawfoot bathtub with a broken faucet. Hot water must be turned off and on at the wall. (The cold water side works fine.)

So currently I am totally stuck on backsplashes! Im reading and clicking on every link. I want to stay true to our vintage kitchen. . .

Thats enough about me. Thanks to all for allowing me to lurk and learn from all of you!
