When we moved here the backyard was totally bare. The only things growing there were sandburrs and dandelions. The previous owners had a large dog and had fenced in the backyard. The ground was very hardpacked and sunbaked clay. Slowly we have added composted material and worked it in along with cotton boll compost, peat moss, topsoil, composted manure, and composted grass clippings from the front yard. We finally have fescue grass growing now and have been adding flower beds, trees, and shrubs. Daylilies have done well here and I am trying to grow several varieties, unfortunately the local nurseries only stock Stella De Oro and a couple of other varieties and I want to find more. I like spider types, ones with fragrance and love the whites, pinks, and apricots. I also am searching for ones with fragrance and are rebloomers. My 4 children and poor husband watch my Herculean efforts to reclaim this area with tolerant ammusement. I enjoy finding new types of Echinacea, Coreopsis and Heuchera.
